Reaction from Patriots locker room
By Mike Rodak
PITTSBURGH -- Some quick-hit soundbites from the Patriots locker room following their 25-17 loss to the Steelers on Sunday evening:
Defensive lineman Vince Wilfork: "We just didn't play well. We had them in long down situations, but we couldn't overcome it. Playing against a team like that, if you can't get off the field on third down, it's going to be a long game, which we saw tonight. ...It's a team effort. You can't say it's the [defensive backs], you can't say it was up front, I think collectively we didn't do a good job defensively when it came down to it. We win as a team, we lose as a team. You take it like a man, you take it like a team, and you move forward."
Cornerback Kyle Arrington: "We just didn't do well in our coverages we normally do well in. ...From the first few drives, they kind of declared it as an inside passing game, but you never want to give the ball up on one play either. We were trying to mix the defenses up and throw different looks at them. But they did a great job with their game plan and they just outplayed us. They have speedy, explosive receivers, but we just run the calls that are being called. I don't know, just a bad day. ...Normally we read better when we drop into zones; read the routes [better], read the concepts better, anticipate the routes that are coming at us [better]."
Cornerback Antwaun Molden, on Steelers converting third downs: "It's totally deflating. It makes you mad. That's with any football team, period. You get into third-and-long, third-and-medium, you have to get off the field, that's the game of football. You give a guy like Ben [Roethlisberger] another opportunity, that's not good."
Molden on his performance in the game: "Of course I can get better. I have to go back to the drawing board, see what I did wrong on film, and correct my mistakes, and get better from there."
Wide receiver Deion Branch: "We felt like we had a good week of preparation, and we didn't show it. That's the part that's frustrating. Coach did a great job of working us, installing everything we needed to win this game. We had a great week of practice -- two weeks rather -- and we just didn't go out and show what we did in practice. It just didn't happen."
Safety Patrick Chung: "If you can't stop them on third down, then you can't stop them. That's how it is. They came to play, and now we have to watch film to see what we did wrong."
Linebacker Jerod Mayo: "I think coming off the bye week, we were well-rested, well-prepared. The coaches stressed us to come out with a spark, and we just didn't answer the call. ...Those guys were just pretty much finding dead space. We just have to better at reading the quarterback, or recovering our man in man-to-man, or being better in our zones, but I'll have to go back and check the film to put a finger on it."
