The Anthony Gonzalez injury file
By Mike Rodak
When the Patriots signed 27-year old receiver Anthony Gonzalez on Saturday, it was undoubtedly a small-money, low-risk signing for a player whose injury history rivals or exceeds that of any other NFL player in recent years.
Here's a look at the medical log for the 32nd overall pick in the 2007 draft, who began his career as possibly the next favorite target for Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, but had since reached the end of the road in Indianapolis:
November 2007: Misses two games after dislocating his left thumb in Week 9 vs. New England.
December 2007: Misses regular season finale after suffering a bruised foot in Week 16 vs. Houston.
Finishes 2007 season with 13 games played (nine starts), 37 catches for 576 yards, and three touchdowns.
Finishes 2008 season with 16 games played (two starts), 57 catches for 664 yards, and four touchdowns, but is listed with shoulder, hamstring, and hip injuries, as well as a concussion at various points in the season.
June 2009: Misses practice in minicamp after suffering right leg injury.
August 2009: Misses preseason opener with hamstring injury.
September 13, 2009: Suffers PCL injury in right knee in regular season opener vs. Jacksonville. Does not play again in 2009; undergoes arthroscopic knee surgery in November 2009 and is placed on injured reserve on December 24, 2009.
June 2010: Misses minicamp action with hamstring injury.
September 2010: Listed as questionable for Colts regular season opener with back injury.
September 12, 2010: Suffers high right ankle sprain in regular season opener vs. Houston. Misses next five games.
November 1, 2010: Returns to action in Week 8 vs. Houston, making four catches for 55 yards before suffering a torn PCL in his left knee on a questionable hit by Texans safety Bernard Pollard. Placed on injured reserve on November 6, 2010.
Finishes 2010 season with five catches for 67 yards.
Finishes 2011 season with eight games played (all as a reserve), with no catches, and is listed with hamstring and groin injuries, as well as an illness, at various points in the season.
