Looking closer at Koppen deal

By Mike Reiss

A closer look at the two-year contract signed by center Dan Koppen, while analyzing what it means:

2012
Signing bonus -- $350,000
Base salary -- $850,000
Roster bonus -- $12,500 per game
Workout bonus -- $150,000
Salary cap charge -- $1.187 million

2013
Base salary
-- $1.1 million
Roster bonus -- $12,500 per game
Workout bonus -- $200,000
Salary cap charge -- $1.487 million

The specifics of the contract were previously detailed by Mac's Football blog, which also noted incentives that potentially increases the value of the pact ($1.3 million in 2012; $1.4 million in 2013).

ANALYSIS: For Koppen to cash in for the full value of the contract, he'll have to earn the starting center role. This highlights the upcoming competition between Koppen and Dan Connolly, who inked a three-year, $9.7 million deal this offseason. That will be a good one to watch, with Koppen looking to re-establish his grasp on the job he's held since 2003. Connolly earned a $3.25 million signing bonus from the team, which speaks highly to how the club views him.
