Detailing the practice itinerary
By Field Yates
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots turned the page on their offseason from organized team activities to a three-day mandatory minicamp, which began Tuesday afternoon on the practice fields at Gillette Stadium.
The following is a rundown of how the team spent its time during the roughly 90-minute session:
12:15 p.m.: Stretching and warming-up as a team.
12:25: Continued stretching and warming up in groups, mostly broken down by position.
12:32: Individual position drills (i.e. offensive line focusing on footwork, quarterbacks and wide receivers working on routes)
12:38: The offensive line, tight ends and a handful of the running backs worked on the running game, walking through plays against a “look team” defense made up of extra offensive players. The quarterbacks and wide receivers, as well as the remaining running backs, worked in a group on more routes. Defensively, the linebackers and defensive line worked with their position coaches on what looked to be a focus on run fits, while the secondary worked on route recognition.
12:43: The offense came together for a team run period, while the defense was split up into two groups. The secondary continued working on route recognition, while the defensive line and linebackers worked run fits.
12:54: First special teams period. The players were split into four groups and focused on punt blocking, with the players deflecting a ball from the hands of a coach who simulated a punt coming off of a foot.
1:00: The offensive skill players worked routes on air, while the linebackers and secondary worked route recognition. The offensive and defensive lines worked with their respective coaches separately.
1:05: 7 on 7, featuring two separates groups, for roughly six plays. The offensive and defensive lines worked with their respective coaches separately.
1:11: Second special teams period, with a continued emphasis of punt-blocking fundamentals.
1:17: More 7 on 7 (this time with just one group). The drill was moved around the field, including some red zone work.
1:36: Team 11 on 11 drills. This extensive period included no-huddle offense, slowed down offense, and moving around the field.
1:57: Third special teams period, with a focus on the punt return team. The team ran through a handful of repetitions.
