Associated Press panel on Pats

By Mike Reiss

Each week, the Associated Press puts together its AP32 poll of NFL teams, and as part of the rankings, voters share thoughts on each team.

The poll is "determined by a simple points system based on how each voter ranks the NFL's 32 teams ... a team receives 32 points for each first place vote, 31 for second place and so on through to the 32nd team, which receives one point. The rankings are set by listing the teams' point totals from highest to lowest."

The Patriots are No. 6 this week and here are some comments from voters (with their specific ranking for the Patriots):

* Chris Berman (ESPN, 6) — "Safely put British souvenirs away."

* Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 5) — "Coming off a bye, and could be gearing up for a late-season run."

* Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 6) — "My concern remains with the defense and whether or not they can improve in the second half of the season."

* Bob Glauber (Newsday, 9) — "Pats back in action after the bye week to host the Bills, who have lost 17 of their last 18 to New England. Pats figure to win big once more."

* Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 8) — "At the season's midway point, the 5-3 Patriots are a game up in their quest for a fourth consecutive AFC East title and ninth in the last 10 years. That's dominance."

* Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 9) — "I don't care what they're pass defense looks like, as long as Tom Brady is standing the Patriots are a Super Bowl threat."

* Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 7) — "Trading for Aqib Talib is a telltale sign of desperation."

* Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 7) — "The bye was good for all the young players to get more work especially on the defense. Traded for the troubled but talented Aqib Talib. Tom Brady gets some of his weapons back and the offense is at home for the next two weeks. The Patriots have scored 180 points in the last five games."

* John Lynch (Fox Sports, 6) — "The Pats were dominant in London and get a week off to enjoy it."

* Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 5) — "The Patriots must hope the trade with Tampa Bay for cornerback Aqib Talib turns out better than 2011 deals for two other players with character concerns — Chad Johnson and Albert Haynesworth."

* Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 7) — "Bill Belichick traded for Aqib Talib because he thinks this team can win a Lombardi Trophy."
