Belichick on T-shirt: 'It's good to have'
By Mike Rodak
In 2006, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick took the podium in an AFC East champions hat after his team defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars to clinch the division title.
Six years later, Belichick stepped up at his postgame press conference after the Patriots' 23-16 win over the Miami Dolphins, sealing the team's fourth straight division crown.
It may have been a "hat and T-shirt" game, but this time around, Belichick wasn't wearing either.
Asked about winning the division, Belichick's response was muted.
"It's good to have (hats and T-shirts)," Belichick said, cracking a brief smile. "It's always good to get one."
The message was sent and was reinforced when Belichick later was asked about winning the team's ninth division title in the past 10 seasons.
"We have a long way to go. We still have a quarter of the season left," Belichick said. "And that's a lot of opportunities for us to improve, which we need to do."
Defensive captain Vince Wilfork was asked why the team didn't have a bigger celebration about becoming the first team in the NFL to clinch its division this season.
"You move on in strides," Wilfork said. "We know that we accomplished something, but in the grand scheme of things we still have a long season to play. The upcoming weeks are going to be very tough, starting with Houston. We know how important it is to get back on track and stay grounded as a team to push forward one game at a time."
