Closer look at Boyce, Buchanan deals

By Field Yates & Mike Reiss

A closer look at the contracts signed by Patriots rookies Josh Boyce (fourth round) and Michael Buchanan (seventh round):

JOSH BOYCE
Terms: 4 years, $2.637 million
Signing bonus: $477,000
Base salaries:
2013: $405,000 (split salary if lands on reserve list at any point)
2014: $495,000 (split salary if lands on reserve list in preseason)
2015: $585,000
2016: $675,000
Salary cap charges:
2013: $524,250
2014: $614,250
2015: $704,250
2016: $794,250

EXTRA POINT: If Boyce is on the 53-man roster in 2014 for one game, the split is eliminated. A preseason split protects a team from a training camp injury. The typical fourth-round contract has a full split in the first year and then a preseason split in the second year.

MICHAEL BUCHANAN
Terms: 4 years, $2.213 million
Signing bonus: $53,612
Base salaries:
2013: $405,000 (split salary if lands on reserve list at any point)
2014: $495,000 (split salary if lands on reserve list at any point)
2015: $585,000
2016: $675,000
Salary cap charges:
2013: $418,403
2014: $508,503
2015: $598,403
2016: $688,403

EXTRA POINT: This is a standard deal for a seventh-round pick. As is reflected with most of these rookies deals, the moderate salary cap charge makes them excellent values for teams economically if the rookies make the club and perform well.
