DE Jones among breakout candidates
By Field Yates
With six sacks in his first eight games, Patriots defensive end Chanlder Jones qualified as an immediate impact rookie in 2012. Though he was unable to generate another sack after that point, Jones still finished the season with impressive totals of 45 tackles and three forced fumbles to go along with his half-dozen sacks.
The 6-foot-5, 260 pound rookie looks bulked up this offseason and could be primed for a big step in year two in the NFL. CBSSports.com's Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco agrees with that notion, as he lists Jones among his breakout player candidates for 2013.
Writes Prisco of Jones: "I am always on the lookout for the next great pass rusher and Jones might be it. He flashed it at times last year as a rookie, but injuries slowed him late in the season. If he can stay healthy, he has a chance for 12-14 sacks."
We often discuss Bill Belichick's belief that many players make their greatest developmental strides between their first and second seasons in the NFL, as we saw with Stevan Ridley last offseason. If Jones can further develop into a pass rushing threat, he'll provide a big boost to a Patriots' front seven that managed 37 sacks in 2012, seven of which came in Week 17.
