Sharing some Aaron Dobson thoughts

By Mike Reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots rookie receiver Aaron Dobson answered questions from reporters after Tuesday's practice, providing a springboard to examine his work since the team selected him in the second round (59th overall).

"It's been fun to be out here, being a Patriot. I'm just taking it day by day, trying to get comfortable with the system," he said.

One challenge in gaining that comfort is missing all-important practice repetitions, which Dobson did Tuesday for undisclosed reasons. With other receivers also sidelined, it opened the door for rookie free agent Kenbrell Thompkins to take reps in the top grouping alongside Michael Jenkins and Danny Amendola.

In the ideal Patriots world, one would think they hope Dobson ultimately emerges there given his draft status.

But at this point, Thompkins and even third-year man Kamar Aiken have seemingly built some momentum that Dobson has not.

Still, Dobson had made some nice catches in organized team activities -- specifically his ability to come down with the football in competitive catch situations stood out -- but he also had some noticeable drops. That was uncharacteristic for a player who didn't drop a pass in his final season at Marshall.

"You know, I did have a couple drops, but I'm just trying to leave that there and improve every day from now on," he said.

That is naturally the right approach, as Dobson still has time on his side. But to this point, the desired breakthrough has been elusive.
