Mayo, Mankins part of PFT's top 100
By Field Yates
Earlier this offseason, NFL Network unveiled the top 100 players for 2013 based on a vote by current NFL players, a list that included three current Patriots -- Tom Brady, 4th; Rob Gronkowski, 25th; and Logan Mankins, 82nd. (Former Patriot Aaron Hernandez was number 77 on the list).
Pro Football Talk has enlisted a group of media members to create its own list of the top 100 players in the NFL, which is currently being revealed in 25 player installments.
On Monday, the players who checked in from 51st to 75th were announced, and a pair of Patriots were included. Mankins came in at No. 68 on the list. At his best, there is perhaps no better guard in all of football than the 31-year-old, who has been named to the Pro Bowl on five occasions.
Three spots ahead of Mankins at No. 65 was linebacker Jerod Mayo, who did not make the cut on the NFL Network top 100. Mayo finished fourth in the NFL with 147 tackles during the 2012 season, arguably his best as a pro.
The Patriots have invested in both Mankins and Mayo as long-term cornerstones for the team, as they have contracts that run through the 2016 and 2017 seasons, respectively.
