Roster re-set with 3 open spots
By Mike Reiss
The Patriots have three open spots on their 90-man roster, which figure to be filled before the team begins 2013 training camp. With this in mind, here is an updated roster re-set:
Big preseason for Mallett to build his stock as a No. 2 worthy of a No. 1 job.
Running back (6)
Deeper than 2012, but will they miss Danny Woodhead?
Seems like a longshot that they would devote a roster spot to this position.
Tight end (6)
Intrigued by what we saw from Sudfeld in spring camps, but it’s a different ballgame when the pads come on.
Wide receiver (11)
Looks like they’ll be relying heavily on Amendola, just as they did with Wes Welker.
Offensive tackle (7)
A Solder-Vollmer bookend combination is one of the better ones in the NFL.
Wouldn’t be a surprise if a veteran is signed to add depth.
Defensive tackle (6)
Great opportunity for Armstead and Forston to break through.
Defensive end (8)
Multi-layered competition to monitor behind starters Jones and Ninkovich.
Anticipating a jump in playing time for Hightower, who was on for 51.6 percent of the defensive snaps last year.
With uncertainty surrounding Dennard, it shines a brighter spotlight on the depth and development of players like Dowling and Ryan.
Adrian Wilson adds a bigger presence at the position.
Hard to believe it’s his eighth season; seems like yesterday he was selected to replace Adam Vinatieri.
Mesko is in a contract year and Allen brings credentials that include the Ray Guy Award.
Long snapper (2)
Aiken has solidified the position after being claimed on waivers from the Bills in 2011.
