New England connections with Lions
By Mike Reiss
DETROIT -- A look at some notable connections between the Patriots and Lions:
TE Joseph Fauria -- Undrafted free-agent from UCLA is the nephew of former Patriot Christian Fauria. Joseph Fauria (6-7, 255) could stick on the final roster as he draws some similarities to Patriots undrafted free-agent tight end Zach Sudfeld (6-7, 260).
OL Corey Hilliard -- A sixth-round draft choice of the Patriots in 2007, Hilliard is one of the few players drafted under Bill Belichick who didn't make it in New England but found greater success elsewhere. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Hilliard, who has been a reserve since joining the Lions in 2009, is in a competition for the starting right tackle job this year.
RB Montell Owens -- The longtime Jacksonville Jaguar (2006-2012) and former Maine Black Bear signed with the Lions as a free-agent this offseason. His biggest contributions come on special teams.
DL John Drew -- Undrafted free-agent was on the cusp of signing of a contract with the Patriots before training camp this year before the deal was nixed at the last minute. One reason the deal might have been nixed was because of a gun-based incident Drew had while at Duke, and the Patriots have some heightened sensitivity in the wake of Aaron Hernandez's murder charge.
OL Kevin Haslam -- Rutgers alum was with Patriots in training camp this year but was waived last week.
WR Chaz Schilens -- Veteran attended the Patriots' mandatory minicamp this spring on a tryout basis, but wasn't signed.
Matt Burke -- A native of Hudson, Mass. who played at Dartmouth College, Burke is in his fifth season on the Lions' staff; he is the team's linebackers coach. Early in his coaching career, he had stops at Bridgton Academy, Boston College and Harvard.
Dave Uyrus -- A national scout, he spent seven years with the Patriots (1994-2000), starting as assistant director of pro scouting before moving up to director of pro scouting (1996-99).
Jason Arapoff -- The Lions coordinator of physical development, he attended Springfield (Mass.) College, where he earned four varsity letters as a defensive back.
Dave Sears -- A four-year linebacker at Springfield (Mass.) College, where he majored in sports management, he serves as an area scout.
