Pats sign TE Mulligan; Devey to p-squad
By Mike Reiss
The Patriots announced the signing of veteran tight end Matthew Mulligan to their 53-man roster, which was expected after the team had him in a for a tryout on Monday.
The team had an open roster spot after releasing fullback James Develin on Monday.
The 28-year-old Mulligan, who played at the University of Maine and has had NFL stints with the Dolphins, Titans, Jets, Rams and Packers, is known more for his blocking than pass-catching.
At 6-foot-4 and 267 pounds, Mulligan projects to the "Y" role, which is the tight end most often aligned next to the tackle at the line of scrimmage (e.g. Rob Gronkowski). He joins Gronkowski (not expected to be available until after Week 2 at the earliest), Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfeld on the depth chart.
In addition, the Patriots announced the signing of offensive tackle Jordan Devey to the practice squad.
The 25-year-old Devey was originally signed by the Ravens as a rookie free agent out of Memphis in May. He was released on Aug. 30.
The 6-foot-7 and 317 pound Devey played in college at Memphis and fills the team's final practice squad spot.
