Ninkovich deferred payment comes due

By Field Yates

On Friday, we passed along word that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would be the recipient of a $5 million deferred payment today on his $30 million signing bonus that came with his extension last offseason.

Deferred payments are commonplace in the NFL, and Brady isn't the only Patriot who will be receiving payment today.

Defensive end Rob Ninkovich, who also recently extended his contract with the team, is set to receive a $900,000 deferred payment as part of the deal he inked early last season.

Ninkovich's extension, which runs through the 2016 season, included a $5 million signing bonus -- $2.5 million of that was paid up front, $900,000 is paid today, and the remaining $1.6 million will be paid on March 31 of this year.

As we noted Friday, there are no salary-cap benefits to spreading signing bonus payments out in several installments. Rather, it's a good practice to manage cash flow for owners.
