Schefter reported that the salary cap is expected to rise about 5 percent from $123 million to about $130 million. This is higher that previous estimations which pegged the 2014 salary cap in the $123-128 million range.
In a year when the Patriots are tighter to the salary cap than they prefer, but still in position to take care of business, this is a positive development.
With the Patriots carrying more than $4.1 million in cap space, their adjusted cap for this season would be about $134.1 million.
The Patriots have about $126.5 million committed to their 2014 salary cap. With a few expected roster moves, they can easily create more space (e.g. defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga is highly unlikely to return with a $3.5 million base salary).
