A feel for the 206th draft pick

By Mike Reiss

The Patriots have the following draft picks in 2014:

1. 29th overall
2. 62nd overall
3. 93rd overall
4a. 130th overall
4b. 140th overall (compensatory, can't be traded)
6a. 198th overall (from Eagles)
6b. 206th overall
7. 244th overall

Highlighting some of the recent players picked in the 206th spot:

2013: LB Vince Williams (Steelers)
2012: WR LaVon Brazill (Colts)
2011: CB Justin Rogers (Bills)
2010: WR Kyle Williams (49ers)
2009: WR Dominique Edison (Titans)
2008: S Haruki Nakamura (Ravens)
2007: CB Ryan Smith (Titans)
2006:  DT Le Kevin Smith (Patriots)
2005: LB Johnathan Goddard (Lions)
2004: WR Mark Jones (Buccaneers)
2003: RB Brock Forsey (Bears)
2002: WR Javin Hunter (Ravens)

ANALYSIS: Last year's 206th pick, linebacker Vince Williams, started 11 games for the Steelers and is projected to fill the role in 2014. So while one wouldn't expect teams to land a front-line starter at this spot in the draft, it isn't out of the question. Usually, it's more of a role player. Haruki Nakamura was a productive special-teamer for the Ravens before moving on to Carolina. Cornerback Justin Rogers filled in when injuries struck in Buffalo (he's now a free agent) and Colts receiver LaVon Brazill showed some flashes late last season. The last time the Patriots had the pick, in 2006, they got about as good of value as they could expect -- 31 games out of defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith over three seasons before trading him and a seventh-round pick to Denver for a fourth-round pick.
