Patriots make back-end roster moves
By Mike Reiss
The New England Patriots continue to tweak the back end of their roster, signing first-year defensive back Daxton Swanson and rookie defensive lineman L.T. Tuipulotu on Thursday, while releasing rookie defensive back Jeremy Deering (Rutgers) and first-year wide receiver Greg Orton (Purdue).
Orton had spent time on the team's practice squad late last season and into the playoffs, and Deering, an undrafted free agent, had just signed with the Patriots last Friday. Both were longshots to make the final roster.
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Swanson (5-foot-11, 191 pounds) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts last year. He was released by the Colts last October and hooked on to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad in November for the remainder of the year. The 49ers released him this month. In college at Sam Houston State, Swanson left as the school's all-time leader in interceptions (14).
Tuipulotu (6-1, 298) recently was part of a large group of players who tried out for the Green Bay Packers. The 23-year-old played in 12 games last season (11 starts) at Utah and finished his senior season with 42 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
