New England Patriots: Aaron Schobel

Why Patriots should get after Aaron Schobel

August, 4, 2010
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- When it comes to free agent Aaron Schobel, Mike Reiss thinks the New England Patriots should make like Aaron Schobel: They should pin their ears back and get after it.

Schobel is just what the Patriots need, writes Reiss, an immediate injection of pass-rushing explosion at a position filled with question marks, one that has been thinned by Derrick Burgess's unexpected decision to not show up for training camp.

That such an option is potentially available to them, or any team for that matter, is unusual at this time of year. But it became a reality on Wednesday when the Buffalo Bills released the 32-year-old Schobel, whose agent told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that his client intends to play in 2010.

Schobel vs. Brady

Any time the Patriots prepare to face the Bills, containing defensive end Aaron Schobel is a top concern. Schobel has traditionally been a tough matchup for left tackle Matt Light.

This note caught the eye while reading through the Bills' media packet: Schobel has more sacks on Patriots quarterback Tom Brady than any player in the NFL.

Sacks vs. Brady
1. Schobel -- 12 (15 games)
2. Jason Taylor -- 9.5 (14 games)
3. Shaun Ellis -- 8 (15 games)
4. Joey Porter -- 6 (5 games)
5. John Abraham -- 5 (9 games)
