New England Patriots: Darnell Jenkins

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots officially ended Wes Welker's season Wednesday, moving the wide receiver to injured reserve, while signing practice squad linebacker Thomas Williams to the active roster.

The team also announced that practice squad wide receiver Darnell Jenkins has been placed on the practice squad/injured list. With the two open spots on the practice squad, the team signed wide receivers Robert Ortiz and Nick Moore.

Welker reportedly tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans. He finished the 2009 season with an NFL best and franchise record 123 receptions.

Williams, a former fifth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008, joined the Patriots' practice squad on Nov. 10. He appeared in six games as a rookie before being released before the 2009 season.

Moore, the brother of New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore, is a rookie out of Toledo who spent time with the Minnesota Vikings after signing as an undrafted free agent. Ortiz is in his third stint with the Patriots since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State in 2006.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- While the Patriots have yet to formally announce the roster moves, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins and quarterback Jeff Rowe were spotted in the locker room this morning, both players presumably added to the practice squad.

The Patriots had one open spot on the practice squad after wide receiver Terrence Nunn was signed away by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last month, but would need to make a corresponding move to add the second player.

Jenkins is a 5-10 receiver, who was undrafted out of the University of Miami. He appeared in one game with the Texans last season and did not record a reception. He has also spent time with the Browns and Buccaneers.

Rowe is a 6-5 quarterback, who was drafted by the Bengals in the fifth round (151th overall) of the 2007 draft. Rowe served as Cincinnati's third-string QB his rookie season, then landed on the team's practice squad in 2008, where he was claimed by the Seahawks last December.

Jenkins took over both Nunn's No. 10 jersey and his locker. Rowe had a No. 9 jersey in his stall and occupies the locker next to former practice squad quarterback (turned active wide receiver) Isaiah Stanback.

The Patriots had third-year quarterback Jeff Rowe and first-year receiver Darnell Jenkins in for workouts at Gillette Stadium this week.

Rowe, who played in college at Nevada and has not appeared in an NFL game, was a fifth-round draft choice of the Bengals in 2007. He most recently was with the Seahawks.

Jenkins played in college at Miami. He initially signed with the Texans in 2008 as a rookie free agent, and appeared in his only NFL game that season. He has also spent time with the Browns and Buccaneers.

Workouts with various players are commonplace throughout the year, as teams are often updating their emergency lists or looking to fill out their practice squads.

The Patriots have an opening on their eight-man practice squad after Terrence Nunn was signed to the Buccaneers' 53-man roster last week.
