The Patriots announced the release of kicker David Ruffer on Friday.
The 24-year-old Ruffer, who kicked at Notre Dame from 2009-2011, originally signed with the Patriots on May 20. He was viewed as a long shot to earn a roster spot, as the Patriots have Stephen Gostkowski returning for his eighth season.
The Patriots were one of just three teams carrying a total of six specialists (2 kickers, 2 punters, 2 long snappers) as of last week, but now are no longer in that category after releasing Ruffer.
