Patriots don't put claim on Babin

Defensive end Jason Babin, who was released Tuesday by the Philadelphia Eagles, was claimed on Wednesday by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The New England Patriots did not place a waiver claim on Babin. In addition to the Jaguars, the Bills and Redskins placed a claim on Babin.

The Jaguars, with a 2-9 record, had the second-overall priority among all 32 teams.

The possibility of the Patriots claiming Babin was explored earlier Wednesday in this space. The Patriots, with an 8-3 record, would have nearly been last in line to be awarded Babin off waivers.

The Eagles waived Babin on Tuesday, which was a surprising move, as Babin was a highly coveted free agent in 2011. He finished last season with 18 sacks, third-best in the NFL. This season, Babin has 5.5 sacks through 11 games.
