New England Patriots: R.J. Mattes

Source: Patriots have six in for workouts

November, 5, 2013
The New England Patriots worked out six players on Tuesday, including five specialists and offensive tackle R.J. Mattes, who has previously spent time with the team, according to a league source.

The team worked out two punters, Robert Malone and Shawn Powell, kicker Jose Carlos Maltos and two long-snappers, Jeremy Cain and Brian Jennings.

It's not uncommon for teams to use their bye week as a time to keep track of their "emergency list" players, which may be the motivation behind bringing in some of the players who worked out.

Powell and Malone have AFC East ties, as they were released by the Bills and Jets, respectively, earlier this season. Cain is a UMass graduate who has been with numerous NFL teams, while Jennings spent 13 seasons with the 49ers. Carlos Maltos, a native of Mexico, spent part of this past offseason with the Saints.

Mattes has had multiple tenures with the Patriots after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State in May. He was most recently released by the team from injured reserve on Aug. 24, though his workout suggests he has recovered from the injury.

The Patriots released offensive lineman R.J. Mattes from the injured reserve list on Saturday.

Mattes, originally a college free agent out of North Carolina State, had two tenures with the Patriots.

He injured his ankle in the team's second preseason game, leading to him landing on the injured reserve list.

The Patriots will need to trim their roster down to 75 players by Tuesday.

OL Mattes shaken up, leaves game

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots offensive lineman R.J. Mattes was shaken up and left the game with 10:43 remaining in the second quarter on Friday night. Members of the Patriots medical staff attended to him on the field, appearing to focus on his right knee/leg area.

The Patriots announced that Mattes is questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Fellow rookie lineman Brice Schwab replaced Mattes on the field.
The New England Patriots claimed offensive tackle Kevin Haslam off waivers Wednesday, and waived offensive lineman R.J. Mattes in a corresponding move.

Haslam, who enters his fourth season, was waived by the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday. He went undrafted in 2010 out of Rutgers, and becomes the eighth Rutgers product on the Patriots' 90-man roster.

At 6-foot-5 and 304 pounds, Haslam has experience at both guard and tackle, and started three games for the Chargers last season.

Mattes is an undrafted rookie from North Carolina State.
