In a wild third-round Open Cup match, the Revolution were eliminated from the tournament on Tuesday after blowing a three-goal overtime lead to the third-division Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-Pro), who won on penalties 4-3 at Skyline Sport Complex in Harrisburg, PA.

Revolution midfielders Kelyn Rowe (94’), Lee Nguyen (99’) and Benny Feilhaber (103’) put the Revolution up 3-0 at the end of the first overtime. But the hosts responded with a fury in the second overtime, as Brian Ombiji (111’) Sainey Touray (117’) and J.T. Noone (120’) all combined to knot it at three after extra time.

Harrisburg keeper Nick Noble saved Feilhaber’s fifth-round penalty to deliver the upset win over the Revolution.

With the loss, the Revolution failed to advance past the third round for the fourth straight year. The City Islanders will play a fourth-round match against the New York Red Bulls on June 5.

The Revolution return to MLS action on June 2 when they host the Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Weather-delayed start: A line of thunderstorms rolled through Harrisburg prior to the scheduled 7 p.m. start, forcing a 40-minute delay.

Familiar Open Cup foes: Tuesday’s game marked the third occasion in which the Revolution and City Islanders met in Open Cup action. Tuesday’s win was the City Islanders' second in the series.

Déjà vu all over again: The last time the Revolution and City Islanders met -- Jun. 30, 2009 -- the teams went to overtime before the Islanders captured a 2-1 third-round victory.

Fagundez sees red: Revolution forward Diego Fagundez was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on City Islanders defender Tom Brandt in the 35th minute, leaving the Revolution to press on with 10 men for the duration of the game.

Vandreuil takes reigns in Heaps’ absence: Revolution assistant coach David Vaudreuil managed the Revolution for Tuesday night’s game. Head coach Jay Heaps was excused from his duties to be with his family after his mother, Jane, passed away last week.

Tough climbing: After claiming its lone U.S. Open Cup championship in 2007, the Revolution have struggled to find success in the tournament, going 2-4-1 since lifting the Lamar Hunt Trophy.
