BOSTON--The Red Sox added left-handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy to the 40-man roster and promoted him from Pawtucket to take the place of injured reliever Rich Hill.

To make room on the roster, the Sox moved Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 15-man disabled list to the 60-man DL. Hill is on the 15-day DL with what is being called a sprained left elbow, and has yet to announce whether he will need Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.

Hottovy began the season in Double-A Portland before being moved up to Pawtucket, and has a 1.67 ERA in 14 relief appearances this season, the last six with Pawtucket. A sidearmer like Hill, Hottovy has yet to allow a hit to a left-handed hitter in 12 at-bats in Pawtucket.
