BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis returns to the lineup Tuesday night, but said that he will have offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia he’s been dealing with.
“It’s an easier procedure and a lot of guys have had it done,” Youkilis said.
This is the second time he’s had this type of injury, the first was during the 2006 season, so he figures he’ll be able to play through the discomfort until the season is over.
“The bottom line for me is going out there and playing through it,” he said. “There are a lot of guys banged up here. It’s September and there are a lot of guys feeling stuff.”
Youkilis recently received an injection in his hip because of bursitis, and he’s also dealt with a sore back this season. His hip has been inflamed for a while and has not healed.
“We’re going to attack it and go day-by-day and play as I can tolerate it,” he said. “Hopefully that’s every day and all nine innings.”
