MIAMI -- Red Sox right-hander Daniel Bard, who was demoted after going 5-6 with a 5.24 ERA in 10 starts, originally was scheduled to start in Pawtucket on Monday night but instead will come out of the bullpen, manager Bobby Valentine said before Monday night's game with the Marlins.
UPDATE: Bard entered the PawSox game in the sixth inning and gave up one run on one hit and one walk. His fastball command was spotty, as only 11 of his 22 pitches were strikes. Bard gave up the run after a single, walk, double steal and RBI grounder, but closed his one-inning outing with a pair of strikeouts.
Valentine said Bard wanted to feel an adrenaline rush.
Bard, who was a starter in college at North Carolina, walked more batters (37) than he struck out (34) as a first-time big-league starter. Bard, who was Boston’s primary set-up man for two seasons, was nasty more often than not as a reliever, compiling WHIPs of 1.00 and 0.95 in the last two years.
Valentine wouldn’t say whether it was the team or pitcher who made the switch. What it means for Bard’s future isn’t clear, but the Sox hope the late innings get him rolling again.
“Hopefully the game’s 1-1 and the bases are loaded when he comes in,” Valentine said.
Ortiz grabs glove: David Ortiz is in line to start two of three games against Miami at first base, Valentine said. Adrian Gonzalez has proven himself worthy defensively start in right field all three ... Dustin Pedroia, asked his opinion on the Marlins’ home run structure in left-center: “What do you think of it? I'm not an architect."
