Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he didn’t think second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s right thumb injury was serious, though he did take the cautious route and will keep him out of the lineup Wednesday night.
“Dustin came in, said he felt really good,” Valentine said in an interview on Boston sports radio WEEI on Thursday. “He was more shocked than worried last night when that ball got in on his hands.”
Pedroia left Tuesday night’s game following the seventh inning. He hit a foul pop on an inside pitch, breaking his bat, and was seen shaking his hand as he walked back to the dugout. Pedroia has been wearing a guard around his right thumb after he suffered a partially torn adductor muscle and missed six games before returning on June 5. He is batting .170 in 13 games since his return.
Nick Punto will start at second base in Pedroia’s place, Valentine said.
Valentine said there was no swelling and he did not think Pedroia had an X-ray or MRI taken.
Here's tonight's lineup for the Red Sox:
1. Daniel Nava, LF
2. Ryan Kalish, CF
3. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Cody Ross, RF
6. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
7. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
8. Mike Aviles, SS
9. Nick Punto, 2B
SP -- Felix Doubront
