SEATTLE -- All you had to do to if you wanted to see Bobby Valentine's eyes light up Friday night was ask about what he thought of the swings taken in early batting practice by Ryan Sweeney.
The outfielder is still wearing a small cast to help him deal with an inflamed left big toe, but he put on a show during in the early afternoon at Safeco Field about four hours before the first pitch between the Red Sox and the Mariners in the second game of a four-game set.
"Sweeney looked great," Valentine said. "I think the cast still bothers him just a little bit, but it was a really good BP session for him."
A total of nine Boston hitters turned out for the 2 p.m. (PDT) chance to take some swings. On the list were Ryan Kalish, Brent Lillibridge, Darnell McDonald, Will Middlebrooks, Daniel Nava, Dustin Pedroia, Nick Punto, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Sweeney.
