BOSTON -- A new league rule this season allows teams to add a player to the active roster for doubleheaders.

So, the Boston Red Sox this morning added pitcher Clayton Mortensen as the 26th player on the active roster and he’s only available to pitch today. The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday and normally there’s a 10-day period before that player can be recalled, but not in this case.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said a lot went into the decision to have Mortensen added.

“There were conversations into the morning that we’re guessing at what we might need and what we might need the most, so we decided to go with Mortensen who is a pretty durable pitcher, and can pitch against both sides of the plate and see if we can’t have enough pitching to get through a doubleheader,” Valentine said.

Mortensen will have to return to the PawSox after today’s twinbill.

“Hopefully he’ll pitch well today if we need him,” Valentine said.
