ARLINGTON, Texas -- Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine in back in Texas for the first time since he managed the Rangers in parts of eight seasons from 1985 to 1992.
Of course, things have dramatically changed around these parts since he was the manager. There’s a new ballpark and the Rangers have become perennial winners in the AL West.
“Oh, I had a lot of conversations about them building this place,” Valentine said. “It’s great for me personally to come back here. It doesn’t have anything to do with the game, that’s for sure.”
Valentine posted a 581-605 record during his tenure in Texas.
* DH David Ortiz remained in Boston to receive treatment on his right Achilles strain, but is scheduled to rejoin the team on Friday in New York. The slugger is scheduled to be activated on Aug. 1.
* Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (trapezius) played long toss on Monday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. “He’s feeling better,” Valentine said. “Depending on how the ‘pen goes on Monday, we’ll try to map out a potential rehab program for him.”
* Reliever Andrew Bailey (thumb) also played long toss on Monday and is scheduled to throw live BP on Wednesday. If that session goes well, Bailey could be sent out on a minor league rehab assignment shortly thereafter.
* Reliever Scott Atchison (forearm) played catch on Monday and the club is hoping to get him some mound work on Wednesday too.
