NEW YORK--In his last 100 plate appearances dating back to June 20, Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has struck out 39 times, at least once in all but two of the 26 games in which he has played in that span.

That's more than twice as many whiffs as hits (17) for Saltalamacchia, who is batting .187 (17 for 91) in that span, but you might be surprised to learn that he barely cracked the top 10 in whiffs in stretch.

The nine batters with more whiffs in that time: Carlos Pena (49), Jason Kubel (44), B.J. Upton (43), Austin Jackson (41), Pedro Alvarez (41), Michael Bourn (40), Chase Headley (40) and Adam Dunn (40). All nine players on this list had at least 20 more at-bats than Saltalamacchia.

The positive news in all of this? Only nine players had more home runs than Saltalamacchia's 8, which has made it a true feast-or-famine proposition.
