BOSTON -- Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney injured his left hand after he punched a door behind the dugout after grounding out in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday night at Fenway Park.

A team source said Sweeney was likely to be placed on the disabled list. Sweeney's name had come up in trade talks with the Cincinnati Reds with the non-waiver trading deadline approaching Tuesday afternoon, according to a major-league source, but those discussions will be abandoned.

Sweeney, who finished the night 0-for-4, could not play right field in the top of the ninth because he could not throw the ball. He will have X-rays on Tuesday.

“I feel like I let my team down if it’s bad,” Sweeney said after Boston’s 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. “I feel terrible right now. Obviously when you hit something you just have so much adrenaline going you don’t know what happened so afterward it just hurts a little bit.”

Sweeney said he injured the knuckle on his pinky finger.

“I’ve never broken my hand before so I don’t know what that feels like," Sweeney said. "I know it hurts a little right now though.”
