BOSTON -- The Red Sox are not sure yet whether they would have an interest in adding pitcher Derek Lowe, who was designated for assignment by the Indians on Wednesday, but the club is doing its due diligence on the matter, according to a team source.

The Indians have 10 days to either trade or release the veteran right-hander, who is currently at his home in Fort Myers, Fla., in hopes of hooking on with another another organization. The 39-year-old would be an interesting fit if he were to return to the Red Sox, with whom he spent eight seasons. He was a key member of the World Series champs of 2004.

Lowe was a guest on Boston sports radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub on Thursday afternoon and said he not only would welcome a trade back to Boston, it would be his No. 1 choice because of the respect he has for the club.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was asked Thursday if there have been internal discussions about the possibility of Lowe returning to Boston.

“Well, I bet we’re talking about him,” Valentine said. “If he’s available and someone might think he can help our situation, I bet he’s being talked about and evaluated.

Lowe, 39, was 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA in 21 starts for the Indians this season. After starting the season 7-3 with a 3.06 ERA in his first 11 starts, he is 1-7 with an 8.77 ERA in his last 10. Batters have hit .350 against him in that span.
