The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Scott Podsednik to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 31. Now, nine days later, he’s back.

The Red Sox signed him to a major-league deal on Thursday, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Podsednik, 36, never reported to the Diamondbacks, who wanted him to play for Triple-A Reno. When he refused, the team granted him free agency.

Now, in a strange twist of fate, he’s back with the Red Sox.

He’s a career .281 hitter with 42 home runs and 307 RBIs in nine major league seasons. In 19 games with the Red Sox earlier in the season, he batted .387 with a home run, seven RBIs and six stolen bases.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Podsednik landed on the 15-day disabled list with a groin injury. He was then activated and optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 6.
