CLEVELAND -- Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks broke his right wrist when he was hit by a 95 mph fastball in the ninth inning Friday night, the Boston Globe reported, citing an anonymous source.

The Red Sox will call up Danny Valencia from Triple-A Pawtucket, according to the Globe.

With only seven weeks left in the season, whether Middlebrooks could return this season would seem to be in question.

Speaking to reporters before Middlebrooks had an X-ray, Bobby Valentine's prognosis wasn't good.

"Bad spot," Valentine said after Boston's 3-2 win. "He got hit pretty good in a bad place. ... He's in a lot of pain. I was hoping it was down on the meat. It was straight on the bone."

Middlebrooks was hit by Indians reliever Esmil Rogers just below the right wrist.

"I don't know anything," Middlebrooks said after the game. "We're waiting to see."

Middlebrooks, batting .288 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs, was replaced at third base by Nick Punto.

The Red Sox acquired Valencia from the Twins on Aug. 5 for minor league outfielder Jeremias Pineda. Valencia has hit just .198 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games this season.
