Cherington 'not itching' for more trades

8/18/2012

NEW YORK -- Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Saturday there is "nothing on the front burner," but did not rule out making further deals before the end of the August waiver period.

Earlier this week, Cherington dealt catcher Kelly Shoppach to the New York Mets, and veterans like outfielder Cody Ross, infielder Mike Aviles, starting pitcher Aaron Cook and reliever Vicente Padilla could all attract interest from contenders.

"I think regardless of what our record is at the end of the year, for the next six weeks it's important that we play good fundamental baseball, the way we want to play it, the way we've always played it," Cherington said. "The players who are here that can help us do that, I'm not itching to move them. We'd have to have a compelling reason to move them."
