BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox announced Monday that pitching coach Bob McClure has been relieved of his duties and that assistant pitching coach Randy Niemann will serve as interim pitching coach for the remainder of the season.

McClure, 60, was named the club’s pitching coach in December 2011, only a month after he was hired as a special assistant for the organization. He spent the previous six seasons as the pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals.

Niemann, 56, is in his first season with the Red Sox and was manager Bobby Valentine’s lone coaching hire during the offseason.
