With the Twins reportedly putting starting catcher Joe Mauer on waivers earlier this week, speculation has started growing about whether the Red Sox would consider putting in a claim on him and possibly working out a trade to bring him to Boston.

After all, the team had been high on the 29-year-old catcher in seasons past and there's plenty of money in the coffers after the blockbuster that rid the Sox of about $260 million in salary going forward. Mauer has six years and $138 million left on his deal beyond this season.

Despite the past interest and money to spend, the Red Sox have no plans to make a run at Mauer at this time, a major league source told ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes.
