OAKLAND -- Bobby Valentine said hasn't seen enough of Jose Iglesias to make any definitive statements about him. But the Boston manager apparently doesn't want to see his young prospect every day either.

Iglesias, who is a candidate to be the Red Sox shortstop of the future, was not in the starting lineup on Saturday in Oakland. He has started just three of the eight games since he's been up.

When Valentine was asked how much he expected Iglesias to play the rest of the way, he said only: "He'll play. He'll get his playing time. He'll probably play tomorrow."

Iglesias was hitting .329 at Triple-A Pawtucket in 19 August games before he was promoted. He is hitless in 12 at-bats so far with the Red Sox.

"He doesn't look very fluid," Valentine said. "A little tight maybe."

Valentine also wasn't prepared to make any evaluations of Iglesias' long-range ability, based on what he's seen so far.

"I haven't seen much of him this year," Valentine said. "He's only been here about 10 days. Interestingly enough, when he plays in the field, he hasn't gotten many balls. The at-bats will hopefully get better."
