OAKLAND -- When Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was asked whether he and his staff had kicked around the idea of any changes to a starting rotation that posted a 5.57 ERA in August, Valentine responded: "You have any suggestions? Most anything that's out there I think we've thought of. Maybe there's something that we haven't thought about."

The Red Sox used seven starters in August. One of them, Franklin Morales, is on the disabled list with a tired shoulder. Another, Zach Stewart, was sent back to Triple-A after a one-game cameo in which he gave up nine runs in three innings.

Other than the five in the current rotation, the only other pitcher on the staff who has started for Boston this year is Daniel Bard, and the club seems content on keeping him in the bullpen.

Alfredo Aceves started four games for the Red Sox last year, but Valentine didn't seem inclined to try him in the rotation again.
