OAKLAND -- Despite the current Red Sox slump, Bobby Valentine said he's optimistic about the last month of the season.

"I'm hoping for the guys to keep building their individual statistics and hope they collectively build the team statistics," Valentine said. "I think we are going to win a lot of games."

Asked to elaborate, he said: "Why shouldn't I think that? I'm the manager of the year. We get paid to play and win."

Meanwhile, Valentine continued the lineup shuffling that has been a regular feature since Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez have been gone. Valentine moved Jacoby Ellsbury to the leadoff spot, where he hit for much of the season, and he put Scott Podsednik in the No. 3 spot, with Dustin Pedroia in between.

"I thought I'd switch it up," Valentine said. "Maybe it will look good. I haven't seen it."
