PawSox go for Governor's Cup glory

BOSTON -- The last time the Pawtucket Red Sox won the Governors’ Cup, PawSox publicist Bill Wanless tells us, Arnie Beyeler was a star infielder for Wichita State University.

That was in 1984. Tuesday night, PawSox manager Beyeler takes his team into the first game of the Governors’ Cup final against the Charlotte Knights in McCoy Stadium, Boston’s Triple-A farm club having eliminated Scranton-Wilkes Barre in the first round of the International League playoffs.

Remarkably, the PawSox won the wild card in the IL despite enormous roster turnover: Only seven players who were on the team’s Opening Day roster are still with the club. Key contributors such as Mauro Gomez, who was the International League MVP, and shortstop Jose Iglesias are now with the big-league club.

Neither pitcher starting the first two games of the series for the PawSox were in the organization at the start of the season. Knuckleballer Steven Wright, the Game 1 starter, came from the Indians in the Lars Anderson deal, while Game 2 starter Zach Stewart was acquired from the White Sox in the Kevin Youkilis trade.

Tickets are on sale at the McCoy box office. Fans can also charge tickets with any major credit card by calling the PawSox at (401) 724-7300 or visiting the PawSox website at www.pawsox.com. Both games begin at 7:05. Games 3 and 4 will be Friday and Saturday nights in Charlotte; Game 5, if necessary, will be played Sunday in Charlotte.

You can listen to Aaron Goldsmith and Steve Hyder bring all the action on WHJJ (920 am) or streamed on-line at http://www.milb.com/multimedia/audio.jsp?sid=t533.
