Lackey's latest session goes well

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- John Lackey threw 30 pitches Tuesday prior to the Red Sox's game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, and manager Bobby Valentine said everything went well.

“He was up and down, 15 pitches each time,” Valentine said. “He said afterward he felt really good. He threw everything but his cutter.”

Lackey underwent Tommy John surgery in October and will not pitch for the Red Sox this season.

“He acknowledged that the medical staff was outstanding, from spring training throughout this entire season,” Valentine said. “He feels really good about where he is.”

Lackey, 33, signed as a free agent with the Red Sox after the 2009 season and is 26-23 in two seasons with Boston. Valentine said Lackey will pitch Sunday in an intrasquad game in Fort Myers.

“That will be his last duty of the year,” he said.
