Source: Sox eye Dodgers coach Wallach

BOSTON --The Red Sox asked for and were granted permission by the Los Angeles Dodgers to interview third-base coach Tim Wallach for their vacant manager's position, a team source said.

Wallach, 55, is a former five-time All-Star third baseman who between stints as Dodgers hitting coach and third-base coach managed their Triple-A team in Albuquerque for two seasons.

He guided Albuquerque to a franchise-record 80 wins in 2009 and was named Pacific Coast League manager of the year.

The Boston Herald first reported Boston's contact with Wallach.

The Red Sox last Thursday fired Bobby Valentine as manager. Their search is expected to begin in earnest Friday, after team CEO Larry Lucchino returns from a brief vacation in Europe.
