Source: Red Sox 'close' on Victorino

December, 4, 2012
NASHVILLE -- The Boston Red Sox are in the “driver’s seat” to get a deal done with free-agent outfielder Shane Victorino, a baseball source said Tuesday afternoon.

“They’re getting close,” the source said, “but nothing is done yet.”

The offer is a three-year deal for around $38 million, the source said.

If the Red Sox sign the left-handed-hitting Victorino, that would almost certainly eliminate the possibility of outfielder Cody Ross returning to the Red Sox, as Victorino would project as the team’s everyday right fielder.

The 32-year-old Victorino, who was traded midseason from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Los Angeles Dodgers, had a down season. He hit a combined .255 with 11 homers, 55 RBIs and a .704 OPS. He did have a career-high 39 stolen bases.
