Youkilis, 33, played 111 games at third base and 26 games at first last season for the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, batting .235 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs.

In New York, Youkilis is expected to serve as a replacement for third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who is expected to miss much of the first half of next season because of hip surgery.

Youkilis played his first eight seasons with the Red Sox, debuting in the majors in 2004 and playing a key role for the 2007 World Series champs. He became a fan favorite for his hard-nosed play and received big ovations at Fenway during his last game with the Red Sox and when he returned after being traded to the White Sox.

But how will the Fenway Faithful react to seeing him in enemy pinstripes?

Red Sox fans weren't shy about voicing their displeasure with Johnny Damon when he left the Red Sox for the Yankees as a free agent following the 2005 season, but the cases aren't all that similar. The Red Sox were in the bidding for Damon, but he reportedly took about $2 million more per season on a four-year deal with New York. In Youkilis' case, the fiery infielder was traded to the White Sox in June after his relationship with manager Bobby Valentine had deteriorated. Youkilis became a free agent after the White Sox declined to pick up a $13 million option for 2013, and the Yankees were one of his only reported suitors.
