FORT MYERS, Fla. -- With David Ortiz, everything is always magnified.

John Farrell understands. But the manager said before Tuesday’s exhibition against Team Puerto Rico that the team is not going to push Ortiz into action until he’s ready.

Farrell said the team is hopeful that Ortiz can play in a game by the end of the week, but “we’re not going to rush this as far as a date this week on the calendar.”

Ortiz went through some more base-running drills Tuesday -- less volume and less intensity, just as the program’s parameters called for, according to Farrell.

“The concern following those intense base-running sessions is less today than it was three days ago, so he’s making steady progress,” Farrell said. “Once he comes out of today, we’ll determine what the next steps are. We’re only on Tuesday of this week. We’re going to work off David’s response to the work sessions. But the fact he’s able to get back on the base paths today and feel pretty good about himself before going into it is a positive sign.”

Notes:

* Craig Breslow didn’t do any throwing on Tuesday and will throw from 75-90 feet Wednesday.

* Daniel Bard is tentatively scheduled to appear in Thursday’s game against the Twins at Hammond Stadium.

* Franklin Morales is still experiencing low-back stiffness but is responding well to treatment. Farrell said that Morales did some core stability exercises Tuesday, but there is no date for him to even do a bullpen session, let alone pitch in a game.

* Daniel Nava will start tonight in right field -- a position he may have to master if he wants to start the season in Boston.

“He’s improved tremendously in left field, but given the potential makeup of our bench and our extra outfield situation, the ability to play right field probably will be a key in his situation,” Farrell said. “Not to say his roster status hinges on it, but we’re going to take a look at it.”
