Iglesias honored as top AL rookie for June

July, 3, 2013
BOSTON -- Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias was named the American League Rookie of the Month for June on Wednesday.

Iglesias hit .395 with a .453 on-base percentage in June. Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named National League Rookie of the Month for June, joining Iglesias as the first Cuban-born tandem to win the award simultaneously.

After a 2-for-3 performance against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, the 23-year-old Iglesias boosted his average to .415 on the season in 135 at-bats.

"It's something where you've been consistent with your plan and you need a little bit of luck, too," Iglesias said before batting practice Wednesday. "I feel pretty good so far."

Iglesias becomes the first Red Sox to be honored with the monthly award since Jacoby Ellsbury in September 2007.

When asked about loftier aspirations, including the derby for the American League Rookie of the Year, he didn't shy away.

"Absolutely, I think about it," Iglesias said, "but not when the games start. When the games start, it's all about this game, one day at a time. I would love to win that but that's not my goal. My goal is to take this team to the playoffs and try to win a championship."
