SEATTLE -- Jacoby Ellsbury also will be out when the Red Sox face Felix Hernandez, though his injury does not appear to be serious. Ellsbury aggravated his left wrist during an awkward swing Sunday, but stayed in the game.
“He was pretty sore afterward and reported today with similar feelings so rather than risk anything further we’re going to give him a day off,” Farrell said.
That means Daniel Nava will slide over to center field two nights after the fourth four-hit game of his career.
Mike Carp will start in left in his first appearance at Safeco Field since the Mariners designated Carp for assignment and traded him to the Sox in February. Farrell had only glowing remarks when asked about Carp.
“Anytime you have a player have a year that he’s had in the role that he’s filled for us -- he’s made our bench so much more deep,” he said. “He’s fit in extremely well here in our clubhouse and he clearly understands the role that he is in.”
Carp has reached base in 12 of his last 14 games and is hitting .306 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs a year removed from an injury-plagued season in Seattle in which he hit just .213.
“He’s put up a lot of good at-bats for us,” Farrell said.
Which is a good thing, since the Red Sox are now paper thin in the outfield and could be stretching Nava’s defensive abilities by putting him in center. Farrell said Victorino could play if Nava, Carp or Gomes got hurt.
“It wouldn’t be ideal,” he said. “But he is available in emergency situations.”
Infielder Brandon Snyder also could move to left field, according to Farrell.
* Clay Buchholz threw from 120 feet Sunday and is inching closer to being sent out on a rehab assignment. The Red Sox plan to have him throw again Tuesday from the same distance before conducting a bullpen session Wednesday.
Jon Lester (8-4, 4.41 ERA) is 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA against Seattle in his last five starts. The Tacoma, Wash., native attended high school an hour south of Safeco Field. He’ll need to be impressive if the Sox hope to end a two-game slide. Hernandez is 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA during his career against Boston.
