Source: Sox call up Holt, not Middlebrooks

The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Brock Holt, and not Will Middlebrooks, from Triple-A Pawtucket to take the place of Jose Iglesias on the big club’s roster, according to a baseball source.

With Iglesias dealt to Detroit as part of the package that brings starter Jake Peavy to Boston, it is unclear who the Red Sox will tab as the everyday third baseman.

Brandon Snyder has played third base in 13 games for the Red Sox this season while Holt has played in 9. Middlebrooks began the season as the starter at the hot corner but was demoted in June after hitting .192 in 53 games.

In Pawtucket, he is hitting .257 with 8 homers and 30 RBIs in 36 game. He and Bogaerts were in Wednesday’s PawSox lineup for a noon game against Norfolk.
